Professional Pet Care Is Serious Business

Recently, I was made aware of a deeply troubling incident involving an individual presenting themselves as a pet sitter who was caring for a Yorkshire Terrier over the Thanksgiving holiday. The dog reportedly escaped, and upon being retrieved, was subjected to severe abuse—beaten, choked, and slammed to the floor multiple times—resulting in its death at just five years old. Equally concerning is that the individual was charged only with a misdemeanor and continues to advertise pet sitting services on platforms such as Nextdoor. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident; situations like this occur more frequently than they should.

While it is understandable that many pet owners seek cost-effective care options and may turn to individuals advertising on platforms like Facebook, Nextdoor, or Rover, the adage “you get what you pay for” often proves true. This is not to suggest that all individuals on these platforms are unqualified; however, it is essential to conduct proper due diligence. Pet owners should verify that any caregiver has appropriate training, has undergone background checks, carries insurance, and can provide credible reviews. Reputable, established companies will make this information readily accessible through their website or professional profiles, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Many people ask me, “Why hire a professional pet caretaker when someone I know can help for free or at a low cost?”  While it’s wonderful to have people willing to step in, pet care is often not their primary responsibility. They have their own schedules, families, pets, and commitments that understandably take priority.

At Legends Pet Care Services, caring for your pet is our top priority.

Pet care is not a side task—it is a profession, a passion, and a responsibility we take seriously. Here are several important reasons to consider hiring a professional pet caretaker:

1. Trained, Vetted Professionals
All of our pet sitters/dog walkers are employees who undergo a thorough hiring process, including local and national background checks. They complete structured training and are required to earn pet first aid certification before working independently, ensuring your pet receives knowledgeable and attentive care.

2. Fully Insured and Bonded With Written Policies and Procedures
We are fully insured and bonded, providing protection and peace of mind. In the unlikely event of an accident or issue, you are covered—something that is typically not the case when relying on friends, neighbors or those that call themselves a pet sitter. We are constantly updating and improving our Standard Operating Procedures, Staff Policies and Procedures, contracts and forms for clients.

3. Reliability You Can Count On
Our team-based approach ensures that visits are never missed. Even if a sitter becomes unavailable, we have systems in place to guarantee your pet’s care continues without interruption. We also collaborate with other verified pet care companies so if we are booked full or not in your area, we have others we can recommend.

5. True Peace of Mind
Knowing that both your pets and your home are in the hands of trained professionals allows you to fully enjoy your time away—whether it’s a vacation or just a busy day.

When you contact someone who says they do pet sitting, ask them for this information. If they can’t or won’t provide you with the answers, move on!

As you plan your next trip or time away, consider the confidence and reliability that come with professional pet care. With Legends Pet Care Services, you’ll have one less thing to worry about—so you can focus on relaxing and enjoying your time away.
